Welcome to the New Year

It is often difficult at this time of the year to find suitable garden content to write about. This year however has been an exception. The last few weeks we have experienced some extremely mild weather allowing me to take photos of flowering plants. My garden beds are usually knee deep in snow but with the recent snow melt some blooming plants and shrubs have been exposed. My only concern though is we are now heading into some colder weather which could do some serious damage to the new shoots and buds. I am always happy to see the hellebores in bloom. These hardy perennials are a great winter plant and brighten up dreary corners of the garden. I even purchased a helleborus niger (Christmas rose) for my centrepiece this year. It made a change from the traditional poinsettia.

Close to the hellebores under the leaves I discovered a primrose and heather in bloom plus pink buds appearing on the virburnum bush. Even the witch hazel has buds appearing.

The milder weather has made the walks through Fintry Provincial Park a lot easier and has allowed me to capture these views. On dreary days I brush up on my photography skills. There are so many online courses to follow. I also like to peruse seed catalogues and plan for the upcoming garden year. I didn’t really make any new year resolutions.  I like to just take things as they come.

So looking forward to the Spring garden.  In the meantime a Spring themed container brightens up my dining room.

Here’s to a year of new discoveries in the garden.
