Our winter so far has been very different from the previous two years with a mix of snowfalls and snowmelt. Spring though still seems a long way off. These variances in temperatures have allowed me sometimes to have a glimpse of a few blooms and bulb shoots in the garden. The hellebores in particular and a random primrose along with crocus shoots. Most surprisingly though was discovering my new pink “dawn” virburnum starting to flower.
The views through Fintry Provincial Park have changed from day-to-day. One day it is totally engulfed in snow and the next it is almost spring like conditions with powdery blue skies. It has definitely been a lot easier this year doing our daily walks as we are not having to walk so much on ice.
I always appreciate a change of scenery. My husband and I were just down in West Vancouver babysitting the grandchildren. There were plenty of signs of spring beginning with seeing clumps of snowdrops. In addition I sneaked in a visit to West Van Florist where they had beautiful displays of pansies, primroses, hellebores and more. They also do a great job of making up spring themed containers.

As we come to the end of January we are experiencing a sudden cold snap. I guess I must not complain though as in certain parts of Canada they are experiencing a “polar vortex” with frigid cold temperatures. I still take comfort in enjoying my indoor flowers on gloomy days, especially the freesias, plus making garden plans for the season ahead. Stay warm. Until next time….
