The Garden continues to flourish despite very unseasonable weather this year. Each time I return to my garden after being away I am always amazed at the growth. After my recent return the oriental poppies are blooming along with both pink and purple lupines.
Lupines & Oriental Poppies
The lilacs have died down now. Their blooming period is very short. Meanwhile the rockery garden is in its second phase. Now we have a combination of campanula, pink saponaria and sedums blooming and there is a blue veronica just about to burst into flower.
Rockery Garden Plants (Late Spring Flowering)
There is always a lull between early blooming spring flowers and the later blooms of Spring. The peonies are just about to pop open and buds are forming on the roses. Really looking forward to seeing the arbour roses blooming. This is when the hanging baskets and containers add that much needed colour. I started them off early in the greenhouse and now with weekly fertilizing they have nicely filled in. This year I unintentionally created some red, white and blue themed baskets in honor of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. What an achievement for the Queen serving for 70 years! https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/platinum-jubilee.html
Hanging Baskets & Containers
Other perennials of note blooming at this time of the year are the hardy geraniums, geum, aquilegia columbine and not forgetting iris. These may not be as showy but still create that cottage garden style.
Late Spring Perennials
It was with reluctance I cut down on my vegetable bed this year as we needed to create some more space for storage. I will probably regret this as food costs continue to rise. I still have grown some herbs from seed in the greenhouse as well as tomato and cucumber. I always grow the scented geranium to keep the mosquitoes away.
Herb Collection, Chives & Scented Geranium
As I write this post the sun is shining which the garden is in great need of.
