Over the past few days I have been busy digging out plants that are becoming a little too invasive. Perfect timing for our community garage sale this weekend in Fintry. I also have surplus seedlings in the greenhouse, particularly basil, lettuce and cherry tomatoes.
As much as it’s hard sometimes to dig up your favourite plants, there does come a point when it becomes necessary. Case in point, I had a large euphorbia by the pond which was crowding my lacy leaved maple. What a difference it made once it was dug out and I rearranged the less invasive rockery plants in the space left. I have also dug up some iris, lilies and in particular, the fall aster which seems to grow like a weed.
I think one of the biggest mistakes when first preparing a new bed is over planting and I have been guilty of this. You really do need to take into account the width and height of a plant otherwise two years down the road, you will need to be ruthless in thinning out the plants.
Lovely to see the lilacs coming out in bloom.
