Outdoor Christmas Decorating

Outdoor Christmas Decorating, Winter Plants / Thursday, November 26th, 2015

I am starting to think about my outdoor decorating for the Christmas season ahead.  I always like to plant a winter container with plants that I always relate to Christmas.

Top on my list is holly and I always like the variegated type.  It has such lovely contrasting colours and if you are lucky to get berries which up until this point I have not, even better.  It is important to plant both a male and female variety in the garden to create berries.

Another great shrub to use is Gaultheria procumbens with its deep green glossy leaves and red berries.

You always need a certain amount of height in a container so to finish off I like to use a small evergreen spruce or fir tree which is winter hardy.

This is only the start of my container.  I will slowly add some more greens and branches to make it look more festive and of course a few pine cones would not be amiss.  It never hurts to add a few fake berries (from a craft store) if you do not have fresh berries on hand.

My next project will be the outdoor wreath where I use a combination of winter greens along with berries, pine cones and ribbon.

Would love to hear your feedback.
