There are many varieties in the dianthus family, both annual and perennial; the most popular types are the carnations and sweet williams. They are generally characterised by tufted, cushion forming clumps, often a blue/grey colour with upright blooming stalks – the flowers are excellent for cutting. Along with their delicate blooms, they are also noted for their scent. Dianthus prefers an alkaline soil and tend to like a sunny location, flowering in the months of June and July.
In my own particular garden I am starting to get quite the collection. I have bought a number of the hardy perennials that are suitable for growing both in the rockery garden and in front of the borders. I particularly like “dianthus deltoides” (maiden pink) with its mass of white delicate flowers and deep pink centres. This plant too is great for dividing.
Even if you do not have a large garden, this plant would do well in a container mixed with annuals.
