As We Approach Easter 2018

Bulbs, Containers, Easter, Garden Maintenance, Spring Plants / Wednesday, March 28th, 2018

As we approach Easter 2018, my garden is at least two to three weeks behind in growth compared to other years.  I did take advantage of some warmer spells and started raking leaves off the garden beds.  It is always a treat to see what is revealed.  Clumps of daffodil and tulip shoots plus the odd snow drop and yellow aconite.  Just in this past week a few crocuses have started to bloom too.

To compensate for this slow start to Spring I take solace in filling containers with spring bulbs and blooms.  Even the usual garden sources that I go to are short on supplies.  They have obviously held off bringing new stock in until the weather warms up.  Some of my favourite nurseries are The Greenery garden centre (@thegreenerykelowna) and Dogwood Nursery (@dogwoodnursery) in West Kelowna.   I keep these containers close to the house on my porch to protect them as temperatures still plummet at night.

The one container focuses on small shrubs intermixed with pansy while the other is full to the brim with miniature daffodil, primrose, dianthus, pansy and an ornamental grass for a focal point.  Bear in mind to use cool season plants such as pansy that can handle the colder temperatures.

I also have some potted containers in the greenhouse that are slowly coming along.  I particularly like the yellow striped crocus.

Even though the garden looks dormant there are signs of life everywhere.  Leaves on my ornamental japanese maple are unfurling and buds are appearing on the forsythia and lilac.   The latter two shrubs I have finally pruned along with some of the roses.

Wishing you all a very Happy Easter.  I always enjoy spending time with family and friends plus spoiling the grandkids.

Would love to hear your feedback.
