I delayed writing a post as the weather has certainly not been co-operative since my return from vacation.   I think we are all more than ready for Spring, although it may take a while for the snow to thaw.  Even this past week we had several dustings of snow.    

In stark contrast to the surrounding snow cover, the witch hazel (hamamelis) blooms in all its glory.  A lovely sight to see when I step out of my front door.  I finally have been able to put my spring themed container outside on the front deck.  Certainly a welcome greeting after the dreariness of the past few months.  I already had an ornamental grass which I used as a focal point; the remaining plants I picked up from the Greenery Garden Centre in Kelowna, BC. (www.thegreenery.ca)

Fortunately this garden centre opens March 1st and what a treat it is to see all the blooming plants in their cozy greenhouses.  I bought some pansies, primrose and dianthus but there is a whole range of other plants on display some of which will need to stay in a warm environment for a while, particularly the potted geraniums.

With a few sunny spells the snow is starting to retreat and I am always amazed at what is revealed.  From bulb shoots to pansies, primroses as well as buds on the helleborus.  It always makes me feel so good to see these new signs of life with a promise of lots more to come.  

On warmer days, it is a great time to start pruning.  I have already made a start on my dogwood bush and some of the lilac bushes.  It has been a bit of a challenge though this year as I am standing in deep snow while I prune.  The garden clean up is put on hold for the moment until more snow has melted.
