Bright Fall Colours Created by Early Morning Golden Light

These past few mornings have been a perfect opportunity for capturing the early morning golden light.  We have been very fortunate to have such sunny warm days lately. The leaves in some areas of the garden are rapidly changing to hues of bright yellow and orange.  The Japanese maple leaves however are still retaining their deep red colours.

We have had a few frosty mornings so I am glad that the tender plants and shrubs are sheltered in the greenhouse at the moment.  The miniature roses continue to thrive along with the hanging basket plants.

With recent blustery winds there are plenty of leaves to rake however we are changing tactics this year.  We will wait for most of the leaves to fall and then mow and mulch them.  This mulch will be great for the garden beds during the winter months.

The vegetable garden has been cleaned out now.  I still had a number of tomatoes on the vines.  I picked as many as I could and have them ripening in the greenhouse.

My husband and I have been busy doing other garden maintenance particularly pruning the larger climbing shrubs and arbour rose. I have left the seed heads on the sunflowers for the birds to eat and I still have blooms on my hydrangea paniculata even though the leaves are changing daily.  It is bulb planting time and I like to get them in before the hard frost arrives.  Picked up a few more varieties of tulip the other day and a few miniature bulbs; scillia, chionodoxa, bluebells and muscari.  I so look forward to these blooming in the Spring after our long winters.

As much as it saddens me to see the flowers fading and the leaves fall, I do like the down time from the garden season.  I can focus on other hobbies and activities and certainly plan for the garden next year.

Until next time….
