Spring Garden 2022. It certainly has been a while since I have done a blog post. The garden has only come alive within the past few weeks. The rockery garden always seems to show new life first beginning with the scillas that have multiplied forming a carpet of color. The odd miniature daffodil as well as hyacinths dot the garden beds. Just this past week the violets have also come into bloom with their sweet scented flowers. Only a few crocus appeared this year which open up to the sunshine.
The weather has been very mixed this past month but despite chilly temperatures the early spring flowers put on a good show. I also add color by creating spring themed pots. At this time of the year local nurseries (in particular the Greenery in Kelowna @greenerykelowna) offer a good variety of spring bulbs, pansies, violas and primulas.

I have been busy starting seeds in the greenhouse and have also started working on my hanging baskets. Some of the staples I overwintered in the garage. Basket stuffers are starting to show up in the plant nurseries which add variety with their color and foliage. This year I have bought more dahlias which I have also started growing in the greenhouse. Varieties I have chosen are Petra’s Wedding, Shiloh Noelle and Cafe Au Lait. Looking forward to eventually cutting their flowers.
With the help of my husband we revamped the front bed by our front gate. It was encroaching too much on the driveway so we pushed it back creating a small retaining wall. You know how I love rockery plants so will gradually be introducing them so that they cascade over the created wall. I will have to let the tulips bloom first before I move them further back in the bed. I almost forgot to mention that my husband also cleaned out the pond area and we safely introduced the goldfish that had been indoors all winter plus the fountain is flowing again.

It is also lovely at this time of year to see Fintry Provincial Park come alive too. They opened the park up for camping April 1st but only a few campers have ventured in. I am sure by the time Easter arrives there will be more activity. I have had some great walks appreciating the clear blue skies and the sounds of nature by the creek. New shoots on trees and shrubs are appearing daily.

As we approach Easter I want to wish you all a very happy one. I treated myself to an early Easter gift. A white potted hydrangea – it will need to stay indoors for a while until the temps warm up outside.
