The key to a flourishing garden is to always have a good foundation, i.e. a good soil base. Over the years I have experimented with different mulches which is of benefit in the winter time to protect plants and then it subsequently adds to the soil when broken down. One of my favorite early bloomers is the white Helleborus Niger. It withstands the cold temperatures and is always a treat to see in early spring. I like using white in the garden color scheme to complement the other plants, in this case a Heather and Hosta.
