As we reach mid August there is almost a fall like feel in the garden with the smokey skies we have experienced these past few weeks. As they continue to battle fires in BC, I hope they will subside and give all those fire fighters out there a reprieve. The leaves on the lacy leaf maple have changed to different colours of maroon, bronze and green. While the flower buds on the sedum “Autumn Joy” continue to form. Of note too is the red, red berries on the cotoneaster.
As well as entertaining I have been busy canning the many peaches on our espaliered peach tree. I certainly had a bumper crop this year.
Daily I am now able to harvest tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini as well as garlic and herbs. My third crop of lettuces are doing really well too.
At this time of year there is less colour in the garden but that’s when the annuals in the baskets and containers come into play. Nevertheless we still have a number of perennials in bloom and of course the hydrangea paniculata continues to flourish. Quite often some of the perennials and roses have a second blooming period which is like a bonus. As is the case of the blue campanula in the rockery and my double apricot rose.
Annuals Add Colour to the Summer Garden
Mid to Late Summer Perennial Blooms
Summer seems to be passing by way too quickly so I am trying to make the most of it despite the dreary skies caused by smoke. When guests come to visit it is always a good opportunity for us to tour the vineyards or visit a favourite restaurant in the Kelowna/West Kelowna area. We had fun checking out Indigenous Wines (https://indigenousworldwinery.com/) as well as having lunch at the Gasthaus in Peachland (www.gasthaus.ca/). Tourism Kelowna (https://www.tourismkelowna.com/).
Here’s to clearer skies. Until next time.
