May Blooms
The list goes on and on as to the many May blooms that I have in my garden right now. In typical cottage garden style from the aquilegia columbine to the old-fashioned red peony and sweet william, there is plenty to discover. This time of the year the garden is also very lush and green brought on by the occasional rain shower and sunny days. It is also one of the busiest months gardening wise. I continue to deal with seedlings in the greenhouse which I am slowly planting out, tending the vegetable garden and I am already dead heading spent spring flowers from the bulbs to the early blooming rockery plants. The rockery is now in a completely different phase with my tall-growing veronica, blue/violet campanula and plenty of yellow blooming sedum. The carpet of flowers ever increases into the crevices of the rocks.
There is always a small lull before the next stage of blooming in my main beds. First up to bloom though is my crimson peony. The pink double peonies are starting to open too.. I find it interesting that it needs ants to help open up the flowers and the wasps are lending a hand too.
The large flower buds on the oriental poppies are just about to open and I always enjoy taking photographs of these with their papery pink/peach petals. Low and behold the day after starting this post I walked out early morning into the garden and there was one open poppy in its full glory. Such a great sight to see.
Next on the list are the hardy geraniums both the “Johnson’s Blue” and the pink geranium sanguineum that look great in the front of the mixed border.
Just wanted to mention too another lovely rockery plant which also is good for the front of the flower bed, dianthus deltoides with its very delicate white and crimson blooms.
I will leave it at that for the moment and write a second post later in the month as there is another wave of flowers about to bloom beginning with the many roses in my garden. Enjoy these May days before the high temperatures of Summer arrive.
