Late Summer Plant Bargains

Perennials, Plant Material, Rockery plants / Sunday, August 23rd, 2015

Late Summer is a good time of the year to look for plant bargains.  Most of the chain stores have already moved out all of their gardening plants and supplies, however, I have been to several Home Depot gardening centres and managed to pick up a number of one gallon pot perennials for only $3.50 each.  Even though they do not look the greatest, perennial plants will rebloom next year.

Here are some of my finds:

Several different varieties of coreopsis.  I particularly like the two tone orange and yellow variety (Coreopsis “Cruizen Broad Street”).

One of my favorite dianthus with pretty pink blooms is the variety called “Kahori” and I was certainly happy to pick this plant up for half price.  It loves a sunny location and works great in the rockery or at the front of the flower bed.

I always enjoy the echinaceas at this time of the year so I picked up a hybrid called “Cheyenne Spirit” and will look forward to the blooms next year which will be orange and yellow.

Last but not least I purchased a delphinium.  I always like the long dramatic spires of blue blooms against my peonies.

Over the next week or so I will continue to try and pick up a few more gems along with purchasing more spring bulbs for the garden.
