As I went for my walk this morning, I couldn’t help but take my camera with me and capture the last fall photos in Fintry Provincial Park while the sun is shining. We are so lucky to be able to view this on a daily basis. From the brilliant yellow leaves to the crystal blue sky, it never ceases to amaze me. When choosing shrubs and trees for your garden design, it is worth checking to see how the shrub/tree performs in the fall time. For instance the dogwood shrub not only has beautiful fall foliage but during the winter has striking red stalks that look great against the snow. Other examples are the Ninebark shrub or the Red Japanese Maples.
Meanwhile in my garden the odd flower is still blooming from a little red carnation to the pink hardy geranium. I am glad though I overwintered the more tender plants as this morning we experienced a light frost for the first time.
As the season progresses and there is less and less to do in the garden, I turn my attention to other activities in addition to spending time with my grand children. Since I retired, I now have the time to do crafts and bake especially before the Christmas season. In particular, I enjoy making my own Christmas cards and creating my own Christmas gifts to give to family and friends. Last year I made batches of mulling spices and hot chocolate mixes which went down very well. (Post to follow entitled “Spring Bulbs” with regard to a suitable gift to give to your gardening friends). In the meantime though, I am enjoying the outside weather while it lasts.
