I love to make hanging baskets. I know they require a large number of plants to make them stand out, but with continuous watering, dead heading and fertilizing, you are rewarded.
Some of my favourite basket stuffers that I like to use are nemesia, calibrachoa, verbena and one that I always fall back on is lobelia, particularly the white variety. I do like the smaller trailing petunias too and a new stuffer that I have found recently is a trailing snapdragon.
Feature Plants
I usually place 2 to 3 upright feature plants in the basket before putting all the stuffers in. The plants I use depend on whether it is going to be a basket in a sunny spot or a part shady spot. Typically I would use geraniums (ivy type you can plant along the edge of basket and the variegated type contrasts well), osteospermums or marguerites for the “sunny” basket. Fuschias and begonias I use for baskets in part shade areas.
