When designing a garden, it is always a good idea to plant trees and shrubs that add interesting Fall foliage. It will certainly extend the colour in your garden as the summer plants fade. You should also consider plant material that produces bright berries in the Fall.
On our recent road trip through the Kootenays, I was able to capture a few examples.
In the provincial parks there were masses of snowberries (Symphoricarpos) and many rosehips.
In my own garden I have a low trailing cotoneaster with many red berries which looks great by the pond. Pyracantha is another good example which also puts on a show of red berries. I recall seeing these grow on the sides of cottages in England and it can also be grown as a hedge.
Visit your local nursery and see how you can easy liven up your landscape design by choosing a tree or shrub with eye catching foliage and/or brilliant coloured berries.
