June Blooms
As we move into June the garden is overflowing with flowers and everything has doubled in size with the weather going from high temperatures to downpours of rain. The rose over the front arbour is still putting on a good show although some of the flowers are starting to fade. The hanging baskets and containers are looking very healthy and despite me cutting back on basket stuffers this year, they still look pretty good. I experimented with using a few nasturtiums this time but they do have a tendency of taking over the basket.
I have a lovely collection of varied dianthus and carnation throughout the garden; the frilly pink carnation works great as a cut flower and has a lovely scent.
New roses are appearing daily. I always like contrasts so my prominent crimson rose looks great against the simple white roses.
I was happy to see the first of my sweet peas to bloom; one in particular had two tone colours of purple and pink. l look forward to cutting them soon and bringing them into the house with their beautiful fragrance.
Generally the annuals start performing better as the earth warms up. Fuchsias and geraniums love this time of year, not forgetting the “love in the mist” (nigella).
I have two types of yellow coreopsis and the “grandiflora” variety is blooming now. The coreopsis verticillata is forming yellow buds and will be in flower within the next week or so. One other perennial that I have noted that I just planted last year is the veronica spicata with tall spires of purple blooms.
With so much growth in all my flower beds I do not need to do much weeding which is a relief. My main focus this month is keeping the garden well watered and deadheading and or pruning back when necessary when the blooms have finished.
At the beginning of June I assisted in a wedding shoot. I tend to concentrate on the details of the wedding including table settings and surroundings. I was particularly impressed by the work of event planner Renee @wildsageevents who did an amazing job of doing the set up for this wedding down to creating a special table for the children attending. I also was impressed with the use of flower material used in the bouquets and boutonnieres including kale, eucalyptus and white wax flower. Plenty of white, pale pink and lavender accents.
I hope everyone is enjoying these early Summer days.
