The spring flowers are starting to fade off now (namely the bulbs). I still have colour in the rockery garden area as the alyssum, iberis and creeping phlox continue to bloom and of course the lilacs are still in bloom. In the remaining beds, there is an abundance of lush greenery awaiting for the next burst of flowers. While wandering around the garden this morning I noticed that my alliums are just about to burst open. They do add a dramatic effect to the garden with their tall stalks. Alliums, which are in the onion family, have brightly coloured flowers and are easy to grow. They do best in well drained soil in a sunny location.
Soon it will be peony time. Peonies are definitely grown for their beautiful blooms and attractive foliage and work well in mixed borders. They take a few years to get established and do not like to be disturbed. I have a number of peony bushes which are full of buds. I can’t wait to see them open up. (See link from Canadian Gardening with more detailed information on the growing of peonies: http://www.canadiangardening.com/plants/perennials/peonies-on-parade/a/1441)
Discovered a double orange/yellow primrose that I had forgotten about which is putting on a good show and I still have a carpet of pansies in bloom.
Last but not least my two tone aquilegia columbine is in bud (white and purple).
