End of April Review – Blooms and Foliage Abound in the Findleberry Garden
As we reach the end of April, despite the long awaited Spring, there are plenty of new blooms, shoots and foliage in the garden. Young leaves on the trees and shrubs appearing daily and flowers on unexpected bulbs that I had forgotten that I planted last year. In particular my small star yellow and white tulip. I also discovered some of the perennials that I began from seed last year.
I have cut back to making up four hanging baskets this year and once again with a visit to the Greenery (@greenerykelowna) I picked up a selection of basket stuffers. My favourites as always are the calibrachoa (million bells) and the ever popular lobelia. I purchased several copper leaved fuchsias which add contrast to the baskets. The staples of the baskets, i.e. geranium and fuchsia are coming along well with weekly fertilizing.

As it was a slow start to the season I delayed sowing vegetable, herb and flower seeds but already I am doing second stage potting up with the tomatoes, lettuce and basil. With my husband’s help the pond and fountain are up and running. We will have to restock the pond as sadly all of our fish were destroyed by a racoon last year. We definitely will have to be more vigilant this year. It seems there is always one challenge or another to face but that is all part of the joy of having a garden.
Perennials that thrive at this time of the year when the temperatures are a little cooler are the pansies, violas, violets and primroses. They all add a splash of colour throughout the garden beds and containers.
Finally too as I write this post my long awaited tulips are starting to bloom.
Looking forward to more new discoveries in the garden as we move into the month of May.
