As much as I like escaping to warmer climates this time of the year, it is always difficult adjusting back to the colder temperatures upon my return.
This was our first stay on Big Island, Hawaii…a resort about 30 minutes north of Kailua, Kona. The experience was very different from previous stays in Maui. If you are looking for a quieter place, this most certainly would be the place for you. We rented a car for a few days and explored most of the island. The highlight for me of course was the botanical gardens just north of Hilo. Unless you have been given directions, it is not easy to find. We ventured along the 4 mile scenic route and started driving through a dense tropical rain forest. With umbrellas in hand, it took as at least two hours to explore this idyllic place. The garden had originally been created by a couple from San Francisco and has since been donated. It took at least 8 years to clear the land, hacking through thick roots and foliage, for it to be fully completed. Many plant and tree specimens from all over the world have been introduced into these gardens. I have never seen so many different varieties of palm trees, orchids …the list goes on. These photos only give you a glimpse of what we saw.

What stood out for me the most though that it was not only the bright coloured flowers that were attractive but the many different shades of foliage which created a tapestry of colour.
On one of our stops we ventured down to the beach and I was mesmerized by the surf and the power of the water. I thought it was a good opportunity to practise my photography.
Beautiful lookouts, beautiful sunsets …memories to last.
