Basket of Spring Flowers, Crocus, Muscari, Tulips, Primula.  So much to look forward to.

 I never thought I would be so happy to be writing these words “Welcome to March”.  With having said that though we are still not over winter yet.  Just over the weekend we had another snowfall.  It is definitely time to move on and I am hoping within the next few weeks we will start seeing some colour in the garden.  The anticipation of bulbs blooming, new shoots in the garden beds and buds on the trees.  It is certainly one of my favourite times of the year.  Once the snow has melted I plan to become more active with early garden clean up and maintenance.   I have delayed starting seeds in the house as we are a few weeks behind as regards the appropriate time to transfer the seedlings into the greenhouse.  This also applies to my overwintered plants in the garage.

One of my first jobs though is assessing winter damage.  It is with trepidation that I start to study the beds.  With snow still in some areas, it is difficult to know fully the extent of the damage.  I must not be too hasty as there have been times when I have pulled a plant or shrub out and there has been some signs of new life.  The ever impatient gardener.

As I write this post there is little evidence of new life in the garden, however, I was excited to see some yellow buds forming on the witch hazel.  A great shrub to have.  It not only has intriguing yellow blooms but they are also fragrant.  Roll on Spring!
