Everything is doing well in my small vegetable patch. I grew a variety of lettuces this year, all of which we have harvested for some time now. I have tried to stagger the planting of them as much as possible otherwise we are just overwhelmed and I am giving away most of my produce to family and friends.
With continuous pinching back, the cherry tomatoes are forming on strong stems. I have a large quantity of the Latah variety.
The beats, swiss chard, various varieties of onions, cucumbers and zucchini are in good shape too. Happy to see that the parsnips are doing well too. First time I have grown them this year. On the converse side though we did not have great success with the carrots. We sewed them twice and very little is coming through. My neighbour noticed that some of the bird life has pecked at the seeds so maybe that is why. The beans too are slow-growing and I am not sure if that is to do with weather or the variety that we used. Potatoes are just about to bloom so I will look forward to digging some up in the weeks ahead.
I have a herb planter at the front of the house as I love to just pop out and pick a few herbs when I am cooking supper. Finally my basil plants have taken off and I will eventually make some pesto sauce with them.
It’s great having these vegetables on hand particularly as we live a distance out-of-town and July and August is always a busy time for us visitor wise. If nothing else we will have plenty of salads and fresh green ingredients to go with our suppers throughout the summer and fall.
